Decided to not do the 1/2 at lonestar in April and do the oly. I have not done a oly distance and I had a late start as I normaly start in second week in Jan. O well it cost half of what the 70.3 does so I'll go and have fun. So training is going good feel like I could do the half but. On April 5th about 3 weeeks from lonestar at 2:30 I'm at school it 5th graders against the teachers in no holes bar soccer match. This was something I was against from the start and said so. I felt like it was something someone could get hurt at,we don't have a flat place to play ect.. so I said no. Well I guess that makes me an ass,so after further review I said I would play,as I don't know jack about soccer so reffing was out. There arent many teachers playing so here we go.We find the flatest place and I put out cones to mark the field and someone brought thier kids goals from home. At about 5 min. into the game I stop turn and start to run after the scrub. this was a compleate stop,I look around and yellat some of the kids a bit and then take off. But instead of taking off I hear this snap crack sound like you were breaking a good size stick. My left leg folds and I go down. When the crack sound happens I have great pain in leg at knee. Im laying on the ground,I just lay there as the pain is bad. After a couple of seconds I roll over and push myself up,I am afraid to look at my leg at first as I thought the bone would be sticking out,the whole school is out and wrapped around our make shift field,500 of them teachers and all. No body comes to help,no body says anything,I thought for sure they would have heard the snap but no. I tell myself that it must not be bad, and don't be a puss so I try to walk it off. The first step I take with my left leg I hits my other leg and I have to reach down and pull my leg and foot around so it is pointed in the direction that Im walking. I can get around but this isn't working It jacked up and theres nothing I can do about it ,its not going away. I go insides and get two large zipp lock bags go to the ice machine and fill them up and go to office prop my leg on top of desk and put bags straight on skin all around knee,I set there until its time to do duty 3:10 still no one says anything. Ice has melted so I ditch it and go outside to do after school duty(putting kids in cars)After duty standing with the last children waiting in front of office I tell my bosses that I have jacked up my knee, one says ya I saw that, the other say I should go to the dr. but doesnt really know what the deal is what to do if you are hurt on the job. I come home and Ice it some more for about a hour,I find a ace wrap around thing with velcro and put it on. I drive to Burleson to put money down on a car for my son and then go to see one of the boys I worked with at boy scouts get his eagle. Came home Iced it some more, took some motrin, and rubbed some DMSO on it rapped it up put a pillow undere it and proped it up and tryed to sleep. Spent most the night talking to my knee,It was very pissed at me. Next day it is black blue, and swollen. I am lucky in the rest of the week, was testing so I got to set around. So on friday I get a call from Austin,Tx. its the claim ajuster for workmans comp. I had filled out a report the next morning after the game. He said that he had got my report and it was a report only, but said it didn't sound like one and that I should go have a Dr. look at it,everyone else said the same thing but I just didn't wont to believe what had happened. I know what was wrong and knew what the Dr. would say. So on monday morning I called the district office and they got me set up right away. Went in saw a PA he took a xray, checked it out and said it was just a sprain and the swelling would go away and he would see me in a week. Week later went back to Dr. saw the Dr. this time and the swelling had not gone down even though I Ice it three times a day.The Dr. looked at xrays did the latchman test(I failed)he wiggles your leg below your knee and if you have a ACL tendon it doesnt wiggle. He give me a shot, gets be a brace and sets me up for a MRI and tells me he is afraid my knee is jacked up. By now its time to go to galvaston for the tri,I go and watch. The next week my MRI report is back and my leg is jacked, fracture tibia, torn ACL and some other stuff. They send me to the surgion,I am afraid of these guys,so he's a nice guy and he allso does triathlon. He tells me he can fix it,I tell him I wont to recondition it,he say thats fine but he will see me in about three weeks. So I do tharapy Its a bummer, the baby steps thing and the people in there are really messed up,and its super depressing. In the mean time I get a letter where the worker comp people wont pay for a good brace. I call them up and it just business, they have thier ways and they do not want to spend anything if they don't have to. Its getting more depressing,my leg is getting stronger but don't have any stability, and never will because I don't have a ACL. So I go back to the surgion guy and say lets fix it,school is out and may be I can be ready when it starts again it will mean starting over whith the tharapy and everthing but if I don't fix it now it will just get worse. I have started having dreams that Im running, running hard up hills and on trails, funny when I was running all the time while I was running I would be day dreaming about sleeping. So I got a couple of weeks to go before I go in for the fix. And the brace guy called and we meet up and he is making me a brace. Seem that if you go for the fix it ,all pretty much pre approved, wild. Guess they know you cant grow ACLS. So thats the story. But what I have learned is if you love something do not risk that on something you don't. And be thankfull for what you have, and don't waste time being down for something you don't.

cowtown 50k ultra

So did the 50miler the first weekend in Feb. still felt good so what the heck why not. I will start tri training the next day after cowtown, the last weekend in Feb. So I don't tell anybody that I'm doing cowtown because just don't want to hear the your stupid stuff. So I get up and get Darla to take me to the start, she is going shopping and will come back and pick me up after. Got real cold and stiff after the 50mile run and had a couple of bad moments try to get up stairs and into room at motel. Thought that maybe I should have someone around to make sure I make it to the car and drive me home after long events. Live and learn, hate to make people kill there whole day for my hobbies. Anyway had to wait out with a cugillion other fools in the cold, it was a delayed start, just a point cowtown and white rock you have out grown your start area. I know its about the money for you but come on its still a race treat it as so and take care of your runners. Anyway started off slow had to take a pit stop at mile 3 that took over 10 min. to few portajohns. But if I hadnt stopped I would have popped. It was a great day for a 50k and felt good untill about 10 miles to go and then it got hard, road race are a hammering. Whith 3miles to go my hamstring started to cramp so I had to walk about a 1/2 mile or so but was able to run in the last mile. Was pretty tired and hammered after but was done untill after tri season. But then again no

Once angain I forget a race

So I skipped past the FWRC race in Jan. at Benbrook lake it was a half and I ran it with Darla and Ricci. It was very cold, snow and ice on ground and very windy and as allways you have the hills(nice hill). We had all the things we owned on and every inch covered. The low water crossing was full of running ice cold water to run in and my feet went numb for about a mile. It was one of those put your head down and get it in kind of runs.I had my face covered and I guess that caused condesation to form on my face and when I turned into the wind comeing back at around the guard shack the water/snot froze in my nose. After the guard shack you turn a bit and it melted. Darla and Ricci did a walk run,but it wasnt a walking kind of day for me so it was every man for himself so I took off to get it over. But I did wait for them at the finish and had the car warm to get in. At least thats my story.

New Years day

After talking to Mike aka totally spoked, at Heathers NY eve party got the bug to do the rocky racoon 50mile endurance trail run. It was a pretty good party I guess, the tarp naked midnight run was funny in a stick a needle in your eye,I don't know these guys kind of way. So on with the trail run,I signed up and didnt tell anybody about it. I think Darla knew what I was doing she would find me on there web site all the time. She like whats wrong with you,all you guys that have this problem you know what I mean. So I think this is the race for me as they run a hundred mile race at the same time and they give the 50 milers the same time to finish 24 hrs. I do the math and feel if I can make it trough the training it's a slam dunk. I start doing the miles, most on the old tread mill. Doing the long runs on the treadmill is easy for me as I have all the things I need close, restroom, fluids, food. And I know from all that time on the website that they have three aid stations that you hit 6 times on a 16.7 mile loop that you do three times so they would have every thing that I needed and wouldnot have to carry everthing. As my Long runs started getting 7,8,9,up to 13.5 hours long The tread was it for me. It just drove Darla crazy, spent the whole day on the tread mill, watched football games you name it,but I finished everyone and each one made me know that I could do it. Did some back to back long days 30miles sat. and 18 to 22 on sunday. Came race day it was cold but clear,no rain or wind. want bore you with the blow by blow but I had a plan kept to it and finished and that was my goal to just finish. Was hoping to finish before dark but still needed 3/4 of a lap when the lights went out so there no way I was running those trails at night. So I walke it in and that put alot of time on my run but thats ok as you don't know how tore up you are until it to late. After the race It came to me how cold it was and by the time I drove to motel I was pretty stoved up.

dallas white rock marathon

in my last post I went from el sorcho to a week before my first 50miler that was in Feb.2010. So it seems that I jumped over the white rock marathon, it was a good race for me and was fun. Just ran as I felt and didnt worry about anything, ran into the normal bad spot out on the lake but it went away fast. Was able to pick it up from 20 on into the finish. Could have ran it much faster but thats the way it works, that was my 6th WR marathon did my first in 1980 and even tho it was a 5hr run it felt great.

So I'm going to get cought up on the old blog. Last we blogged I had just did 25k of the 50k el sorcho well I moved on from that to training for my second 70.3 ironman in austin,tx. My training went well and felt very strong, got a new sleeveless wetsuit and was pumped up and ready to go. But then again no. Came down with flu a couple of days before event. Felt like hammered crap but went ahead and started the event. The swim was just about the best feeling swim I have ever had, the bike was crap, hills, cracks, bumps, gravel, plus all the things they said you were not to do was done all the way in aces. Did not see anybody in the time out cage, but did see some crash victims. Anyway got through it and went on to the run. It was a death march for me but I finished and cut 10 min. of my time. When I got back to town went to Dr. got some meds and after a month of them the head and chest infections got better. Ran the Turkey trot 10k, and the jingle bell 5k, chest still got hot but was better. All the Hart rate training makes for a slow runner but a strong one. On to White rock marathon, got there late had to pee so was the very last one at the very back of all the runners/walkers ect... I guess that was good because I just ran and had a good time finished strong felt good. So I finished 2009 with two marathons,25k,10k,5k,two 70.3 half ironman tris, one sprint tri,3 or4 tshirt rides at +100k so not a bad year.

So here I am a week away from running a 50mile trail run, got the Idea new years eve,so Its now jan. 29 so I have had to cram to get ready so we will see. Wanted to go under 1:20, did 1:27 and thats ok. Swim got messed up about halfway through ran into lady breathstroking across the lanes, thats a first for me in a pool swim,so I did the Tbone crash into her,had to push her off and that when acouple of guys tried to swim over me this ended up in a bit off smackdown kinda thing. This took about 25 yards to right. T1 was ok but you can allways do better. Bike went well but could have left a little more on the road. T2 ran wrong way so there is some seconds there. Run was hot but felt like I was running slower than really did. Over all every thing went well and I can see that I could have done much worse. Felt pretty good at the end. Did'nt puke thats a plus but shows it wasn't a all out deal. Am alittle sore this am so I might have went alittle harder than I thought. So whats next?

Just got back from Texmex pigout. Been getting up and swimming, riding the mountain bike to work and back and getting in 3miles running at lunch. Lastweek end it rained on sat. so I road trainer 6hrs and ran at Benbrook about 4hrs sun.am. Did the burleson ride today 100k felt real good and tomorrow will run for 2hrs. Got a sprint next weekend in Cleburne, don't know how it will go have not done a sprint this year but should be fun. My long run the next weekend should be 5 or 6 hours.

Well it's time to get it in gear. Been kinda drifting taking it easy. Think I have got a plan now for the rest of year. Will start building my run for El Scorcho, did 14 miles at Benbrook yesterday did 12min.run 1min.walk @ HR so it was very slow 2:50 but it felt real good being out and running. I think I will do my tri training Tue-Thurs. swim 2000,bike about 1-2 hours @HR run @lunch, think I will also put in some core, legs, arms a couple of times a week, will rest mon. and fri. sat will do long ride @hr sun. long run@ HR. I need to drop a few pounds so I will work at being good on the food side. I might slide in a sprint or oly but not a lot as I plan on doing the longhorn half with slowride in Oct. after that I'll rest a bit and start to build for something bigger. I am also going to try and swim a couple of days a week with coach to improve my swim. Hope the extra core and body will help also and I know dropping a few LBs will give me happy feet. So that's the plan for now

So will start the Thursday before the race. Went to see Dr. Bryan and he gave me the green to go on the foot so that's a good way to start out. Friday we left for Galveston, had a nice ride we listened to a book on the way down. Got there checked in to or motel (5 min. from race site) got our swim stuff went to race site. Hooked up with our fellow torpedo's, got into the suite, second time to do this,it was faster this time. We got in and swam the sprint course ,water was said to be 64, felt better than at Benbrook the Sunday before. Everyone said that they were wobbly when getting out and it was because of the sea and water in their ears. I just thought that was the way it always feels, they said earplugs would fix that and it would keep you warmer. The suite feels real tight but man you float great and I need all the help I can get in the water. I feel better about this deal, but am still kinda worried. We walk around a bit then go to eat, we ate Mexican, nothing real heavy duty though. Went back to room lay around watched some TV crashed. Sat.morning we got up ran into Jackie &his wife and Linda at breakfast(mini wheat, apple strudel, juice, coffee) we talk it up a bit and decide we are going to do our last brick very soon and not wait till later. We ride down the bike course 15 min and back and I run down to transition and back. It was kinda windy but not to bad, warm and humid but that's what I expected. We ate lunch (subway) then go down to the race site for the pre race meeting, bla, bla, bla, the whole time the meetings going on Am looking at the markers on the swim, they have put out the half markers and it looks like you swim across the bay and go from one end to the other,I know I can do it but am getting alittle pumped looking at it. We then do alittle shopping, talking ect. We then go and drive the bike course, it just out and back with a loop at the end it took a long time to drive. We find the wall mart and get some ear plugs,by now it afternoon,we want to eat early so we pull into Chile's I had a chicken salad some bread don't remember what Darla had getting kinda freaked but I try to act cool because I know it will pass. We get back to the room and go to getting every thing packed, mixed, ready for the am.
I have a hard time sleeping I kinda have a sore throat, ears, head thing that started Friday night,I go threw in my head how ever thing is to go down. We wake up start getting ready,Darla says it raining out but before you know it we are down at the race. When we are walking up to the check in for some reason I loose the nerves and feel like I was ready to go. We have to wait and wait to get into the water Its fun to watch everyone and take in the feel, I love the smell of neoprene in the morning, It feels like victory. Anyway I digress, we get in the water and swim.
The swim goes like the other open water swims but longer,I am always at the back with all the wacko swimmers. For some reason I have a feeling of just being happy to be out swimming, this happens on the bike and the run. It's a good feeling and I have only experienced this on long training runs like 6 hours or so it feels like you could go all day. About halfway in the swim I feel the suite rubbing my neck,so I make a point of not raising my head as high, also I find that my right arm is restricted and have to work at getting it up and out there to stroke. I swim wide and come in on the corners just the way it worked out. Getting out of the water I don't wobble and the swim felt just about right as far as temp. It was a good thing to get the ear plugs they worked. Had real hard time getting my arms out of the suite but did and went to T1 felt good put on gloves, socks, tri top, ect. no problem. I think most were out on bike when I left, didn't look around allot saw and talked to Linda, and a couple of guys racked next to me. Out on the ride was alone stayed in HR zone as best as I could had alittle cross wind but was looking forward to having it at my back on way back. After I had rode a while started drinking and gels at around 10miles I think the first guy came by I felt like I was going slow but I knew not to mess with the ride my goal was to finish so I just tried to stay down and wait. Had a couple of bad spots at the end/turn around loops but wasn't to bad. I don't know if it was the saltwater or what but started feeling bloated, alittle queasy, and like I needed to pee the whole time. Stopped at the last turn aide station change to another 22 oz. 2hour bottle,I also drank about 16 oz.cold water it was really good, went to port a jon and had a pee, felt better. On the way back the wind got stronger and stronger(forgot saw Ricci and Susan they were all up and happy,it was at a bad spot so it made me feel better as they were working hard and Susan had a broken toe thing) started picking up riders at about 15-20 to go then more at 10 miles by then the wind was just stupid hard came up on Darla she was hanging tuff and not to happy with the wind. Finished the ride and was glad to get off the bike. Note to self/self do not ride long again in tri short/need more pad and buy some bike shoe not mountain bike shoes. Did T2 and started the run, legs felt good no problem at all with legs. Stayed in HR first two of the four laps were easy. Third lap the bloat was getting bad all I wanted was water but it made it worse. Saw all the crew on the run they seem real up beat but you could tell they were hurting. On the last lap with maybe 1/2 mile to go I hit the port a jon and you would have thought some one had punched a hole in a hot air balloon I don't know if it was me are the wind out side but the port a jon was rocking. After evacuation I felt like a new man was able to run in strong to the finish. Stuck around to enjoy seeing the rest of our group finish strong and that was it. Things I learned ear plugs, thicker shorts, better fitting wet suite, better bike shoes and have good people around for support.

About one week to go till the half, doing my brick inside on trainer&treadmill way to cold/windy out. Did White rock marathon as training run,ran with some folks on a relay team. I took the first leg and ran it fairly hard it was a 10k length leg and took about 52-54 min. Ran the rest felt pretty good after the next couple of miles. It was a very humid day and the winds were kicking out around the lake. Ran in my spira racing flats as my Newtons had not arrived and all my others were wore out. Not very smart, but my foot is very tender from long run in Nov. on worn shoes, not very smart anyway finished just under 5hrs not bad for training run. I then did a recovery week, then ran a 50k training run out at benbrook it went from cold to warm and took 6 1/2 hours did it in my new Newtons but foot felt bad all day. Taper time, feel good, foot hurts when running,do all the stuff to it but doesn't help. Start training for the lonestar 1/2 ironman with Tridentfw group doing hart rate training. The wed. before Houston go to gym for swim and can't get a lane so I get a wise Idea and tread water in 98 degree PT pool at gym may help at start of tri. So I do this for 45 min. then get into sauna. Not smart, after about 10 min in sauna feel the urge to take a cement nap but fight it off. Feel like crap all day. Slowride says I bagled and will be all right. So after that I just rest till race. Get to Houston feel good except foot still hurts when running. Race day morning wake up with the runs, take a anti runs pill and go to start. Start race, its humid and warm every thing goes good except have to make a couple of pit stops, take another anti runs pill, and no more runs. Some where between 17 and 19 mi. stomach has one more thing on its mind and I as they say blow chunks. I don't have any more episodes and finish in 5 hrs. Not what I was looking for but is another one down,20 at marathon are over. Oh that right, forgot the foot still hurt. So I'm back and done with marathon I go to see Dr. Brian he works my foot over and gives me some exercises and the foot feels better before I leave office. Note to self go to Dr. when it first starts hurting not two months later. Thats about it for now Training this ironman HR thing will see how that goes the event is about8 weeks out. And I signed up for el sorcho.

Ironhorse sprint tri cleburne,tx

This is a pic of Brian Miller winning,to fast to see. Willy and his kick, and Darla.
